Finding the right words for your proposal isn’t always easy. The words you choose can really make or break the moment.
Let’s face it: Getting down on one knee and asking someone to spend the rest of her life with you can be pretty daunting!
You may think that your proposal can be spontaneous, off the cuff and unrehearsed and maybe all of that is true – but maybe in the heat of the moment your mind simply goes blank? Furthermore, the words you choose can really make or break the moment.
The proposal of marriage should be an unforgettable occasion, not an occasion to forget what to say….
Finding the right words for your proposal requires advance preparation. Ideally you should write down a rough draft of what you’d like to say and go over it a few times to prepare. For inspiration on what to say think about the below three questions.
Inspiration – Finding the right words for your proposal
1. What qualities do you love about her?
When finding the right words for your proposal ask yourself what qualities you most love about her? Yes, you can recall the big stuff, like how generous or big hearted she is but often it’s the small details which are more meaningful and have far greater impact. “I love how you wear pink socks around the house because your feet are always cold” or “I love that you have a secret stash of chocolate fish” or “I love that your legs seemingly shake involuntarily when you are concentrating or thinking about something”. Take a moment to consider your beloved’s qualities and mannerisms and select one or two to include in the proposal. Your observations of small details signal you are paying very close attention to her and trust us – she will love that and she will remember this part of your proposal forever.
2. When did you realize that you might want to spend your life with her?
When finding the right words for your proposal ask yourself at what point did you realize she was the one you wanted to spend the rest of your live with? The key here is to be as specific as possible. Was it the occasion when you were sick and she came visiting (uninvited) with a bowl of herbal soup? Was it a certain occasion when you were in serious trouble and she came up with an almost telepathic like identical solution to what you were thinking? The perfect right words here would clearly communicate that you consider her your lifelong ‘soul’ partner. That your loving connection means you share the same rhythm, feel the same feeling, often think alike and sometimes you even crave the same food at the same time. The bottom line is you two are simply meant to be together.

3. What goals and values do you both share?
When finding the right words for your proposal emphasize values and goals that are important to both of you. Common values are essential to a successful marriage. If one spouse values a simple lifestyle and the other values accumulating wealth, it doesn’t matter how well you communicate, differences in basic life orientation will present constant opportunities for conflict. If you both believe in and love God, now’s the time communicate that. If you share the same attitude towards family values and devotion towards parents consider incorporating that. Was there a time were you fought together to make something better? Having the same vision of the future is widely regarded as one of the most significant signs that you’ve found your soulmate. Recall an instance of shared vision and say something like, “we both love [blank], and dream of [blank], so together we can [blank].”
We’d suggest when considering the best order to structure your proposal to bring up shared goals and values last. Reason being, it’s the perfect lead-in to the words she’s been waiting to hear (drumroll, please): “And those are just a few of the reasons I’m hoping you’ll spend the rest of your life with me. Will you marry me?”
