Is it ok to propose with a fake engagement ring?

Fake engagement rings are perfect for a surprise proposal

Fake engagement rings are perfect for surprise proposals. Don’t risk proposing with a diamond ring she may hate, use a fake proposal ring instead!

We are frequently asked – is proposing with a fake ring ok?   We understand that to some the concept of fake engagement rings couldn’t be less romantic.

However, the trend of proposing with fake engagement rings, sometimes also called a temporary or placeholder engagement ring has actually gained huge traction in the past five years.

In fact, as weddings make a comeback post-Covid and cost-of-living pressures bite, many couple are looking to rein in spending.   One option is to use a fake engagement ring for proposal and buy a better one later.

So, is it OK to buy a fake engagement ring?  The answer is yes!  Proposing with fake ring is a great idea for five reasons. First, you don’t know what she wants. Spending thousands on a diamond engagement ring she hates could lose you thousands trying to exchange it. Second, a fake engagement ring enables a surprise marriage proposal. This is because you don’t have to give the game away by getting ring advice from her family or friends. Continue reading below to find out why a fake engagement ring for proposal is actually a very clever idea.

Five reasons why it is OK to buy a fake engagement ring

1.    You don’t know what she wants

Are you seriously going to spend thousands of dollars on a diamond engagement ring without knowing whether she’ll like it?

According to the Knot’s 2021 Jewelry & Engagement Study, Americans spent a national average of $6,000 on engagement rings.

The internet is awash with forums and message boards where women vent their frustration and disappointment over their partner’s choice of diamond engagement ring.

“It doesn’t fit properly”, “the setting is old fashioned”, ”it doesn’t match my finger shape”, “I wanted platinum, not yellow gold”, “the style is all wrong for my finger shape, what was he thinking?”

If you step back and think rationally about it how’s a guy who knows squat about Jewelry to begin with supposed to ace the perfect choice of diamond engagement ring for his beloved?

One look at the different styles online can give a small hint of just how many options there are.  From round-cut (the perennial favorite) to oval-shaped, emerald-cut, radiant-cut, and princess-cut to various settings; bezel, prong, tiffany and more.  The options and thus the opportunity to disappoint her are vast.

If the proposal is a surprise, you don’t know what she wants and the chances of you buying an expensive engagement ring she doesn’t like are very high indeed.

Is it ok to propose with a fake ring first?   The answer is yes because a diamond engagement ring loses 50% of its value as soon as you leave the jeweller.  Exchanging a diamond engagement ring because she hates it could lose you thousands of dollars.  There is a much smarter way.

Oh no! This guy should have bought her a fake engagement ring so they could later shop for the real thing together

Enter the raison d’être of fake engagement rings.  It’s a ring to make the surprise proposal with.  Furthermore, its for her to wear until the “real” ring is found – ideally together.

Only she knows what she wants.  The fake engagement ring says, ‘I want to spend the rest of my life with you and start this journey off right now. I want to make you happy.’

2.    So you can make the proposal a surprise

“Will you marry me?”  Those four little words can turn the most levelheaded person into a ball of jitters—and who can blame them?  To say asking the love of your life to spend forever with you is nerve-racking would be an understatement.

Beyond hoping they’ll say “yes,” there’s pressure to have a great story to tell your loved ones and future family.  The key to that is to keep the whole proposal plan a complete secret and a surprise!

People love surprises, especially when it’s something they’ve been wanting for a long time. That’s why it’s vitally important that when you’re about to propose marriage, you keep your plans and the way you go about it a complete surprise.

Do it with a ring!  In a recent survey conducted with more than 19,000 couples, “proposing with no ring” was ranked number one as the biggest engagement faux pas.

Sure, your declaration of love and request for a lifetime commitment should be more important than whether or not you’re bearing jewelry, but you have to understand that to many, an engagement won’t seem 100 percent legit unless she’s got an engagement ring to show for it.

Some men try and beat the odds by buying an expensive diamond engagement ring for the proposal by approaching her best friend, sibling or mother for help with the choice. Don’t!

Dummy engagement ringPHOTO:   Is it ok to buy a fake engagement ring?  Absolutely!   Today in America many men propose with a fake ring first and shop for the deal together – after she’s said yes!   Proposing with a fake ring removes stress.   Photo above is of the LUX, a round star cut very high grade fake canary yellow diamond ring from the Luxuria® Jewelry brand.

If you approach her best friend or mother for help in selecting the ring, not only is there a strong chance they will spill the beans and ruin your “surprise” proposal – her best friend, sibling or mother are NOT her and only she knows what she wants.

Fake engagement rings are perfect for a surprise proposal.  Further, high quality fake engagement rings are an exceptionally good substitute for diamond; don’t cost the earth and give you some breathing space after the proposal is accepted to shop for the forever ring together.  This way she gets a ring which perfectly suits her hand and her tastes.  If she doesn’t, she can’t blame you!

3.    You can shop for your “forever ring” together

Women are the driving force behind the subtle changes to wedding traditions.

Whereas a bride previously cooed over whatever she was given, nowadays she knows what she wants “and insists on getting it.”

Its’ therefore no surprise that over 50% of engagement ring customers would now rather choose a ring with their fiancée after she has said ‘yes’ according to a Knots Jewelry & Engagement Ring Study.

The purchase of a fake engagement ring allows you to propose now but importantly shop later TOGETHER for the real thing – when finances allow.  Here’s a hint – she really likes the together bit.  It’s ‘her’ finger, its empowering and can also be quite romantic to go ring shopping together.   These days, this doesn’t mean you have to head to your local jewelry store to pick out the rock of your dreams.  You can ring shop together from the comfort of your couch.

propose with temporary ring

4.    So she has a travel ring

Money spent on fake engagement rings is not wasted because the ring can be repeatedly used as a travel ring for vacation purposes.  How many times do you hear about a bride who’s come home from her honeymoon devastated that her new diamond is now floating at the bottom of an azure blue sea in the Caribbean somewhere?

Fake engagement rings are perfect for those who don’t want to risk taking a valuable diamond ring abroad, or pay higher insurance premiums for the privilege to do so.  A temporary ring for proposal makes a great traveling companion.

Many people who’ve had expensive diamond jewelry stolen either couldn’t afford to replace it or didn’t want to repeat the risk.

With today’s complex travel security, the chance of having your jewelry stolen is higher than ever before.  With a fake engagement rings there’s no need for costly insurance or to worry about loss or theft.

Travelling alone? Fake engagement rings can help ward off unwanted attention

Furthermore, if she is travelling alone fake engagement rings can help ward off unwanted attention from men.  More often than you realize, after spotting an engagement or wedding ring, men will avoid harassing her because her fiancé or husband might be just around the corner…

5.    Fake engagement rings look realistic

They might be fake engagement rings, but high quality cubic zirconia engagement rings are an exceptionally good substitute for diamond – so good that not even a jeweler can spot the difference.

Like diamond, cubic zirconia stones are graded according to carat, color, clarity and cut. They are graded on a scale from A to AAAAA, A being the lowest and AAAAA (or 5A) being the highest.  While 5A is the best grade among machine-cut CZ, even higher grading is possible via hand-cut.

Hand-cut cubic zirconia quality is dependent on the technique and the experience of the professional cutting the stone.  A hand-cut CZ, cut with improper technique will not have the brilliance of a diamond.

This is why it’s so important, when shopping for hand-cut cz to purchase from a reputable jeweler or supplier.  Not all suppliers declare the CZ grade – so look for more details in the website product description.  Sometimes additional information can be found in website product knowledge or FAQ sections.  If shopping at a jewelry store be sure to ask the jeweler for product material details.

If cut properly, a hand-cut cubic zirconia will have the same luminosity of fine diamond and be indistinguishable to the eye.
